WagtailWagtail, common name for any of several songbirds, widely distributed in Eurasia. Two species, the white wagtail and the yellow wagtail, nest in Alaska, but normally migrate down the west side of the Pacific and are rarely seen in the contiguous states of the United States. Wagtails are almost exclusively terrestrial in habits. Most frequent open and well-cultivated districts, where they are found on banks of streams and ponds and in pastures, usually walking about while pumping their tails up and down. The white wagtail is often seen on city park lawns in western Europe. Scientific classification: Wagtails belong to the family Motacillidae of the order Passeriformes. The white wagtail is classified as Motacilla alba and the yellow wagtail as Motacilla flava. Wagtail Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 2001. © 1993-2000 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. |
